About Orthopaedic Surgery

Orthopaedic surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the care of the musculoskeletal system, that is, the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the arm, legs, and spine, along with the spinal and peripheral nerves which carry signals to and from these issues. Orthopaedic (or orthopedic) surgeons,a re graduates of medical or osteopathic schools who have continued their education beyond four years of college, four years of medical school, and internship to take training as orthopaedic surgery residents for four or more years in a hospital which is approved for this training.

Some orthopaedists specialize further in specific areas of musculoskeletal care, and have taken approved fellowships after residency in such areas as Hand Surgery, Sports Medicine, and Total Joint Surgery, as the physicians in our practice have done,or in many other types of fellowships, such as Pediatric Orthopaedics, Trauma, Foot Surgery, Spine Surgery etc.

The care provided by orthopaedic surgeons to their patients may be surgical or non-surgical in nature. Non-surgical conservative treatment includes medicines, physical or other therapeutic regimens, cast, splints, orthoses and braces. Consultations with other medical and allied health professionals are also utilized to treat musculoskeletal conditions.
